How to practice French conversation even as a beginner

One of the most common things I hear from students is: "I know the grammar, but I freeze when I have to speak." If you feel this way, you are not alone. Conversation is often the biggest hurdle, but you don't need to be an expert to start speaking. In fact, you should start speaking on day one.
1. Use "Survival Phrases" as your building blocks
You don't need 1,000 words to have a conversation. You need about 20 high-frequency phrases. Phrases like "Qu'est-ce que c'est ?" (What is it?) or "Je ne comprends pas, pouvez-vous répéter ?" (I don't understand, can you repeat?) keep the dialogue moving.
2. The "Shadowing" technique
Before you speak with others, speak with yourself. Listen to a short clip of a native speaker—perhaps a video of me showing you the beaches of Île de Ré—and repeat exactly what I say, mimicking the rhythm and melody. This builds the muscle memory in your jaw and tongue.
3. Focus on connection, not perfection
In my lessons, we don't aim for a perfect sentence; we aim for a successful interaction. Whether we are talking about your pets, your job, or my dog Heidi, the goal is to get your message across. When you stop worrying about every single verb ending, your brain relaxes, and the words flow more easily.
4. Personalized 1-on-1 practice
The fastest way to improve conversation is through personalized attention. In a group class, you might speak for five minutes. In a private lesson with me, the focus is entirely on you. I provide immediate, gentle feedback and encouragement to help you find your voice.
Stop waiting for "someday" to start speaking. Let's talk today!
