Common mistakes when learning French (And how to avoid them)

We all make mistakes when learning a new language—it is a natural part of the journey. However, some common pitfalls can slow you down or lead to embarrassing misunderstandings. Having taught hundreds of students, I have seen these patterns many times.
Identifying these errors early will build your confidence and help you sound much more like a native speaker.
1. Using "False Friends" (Les Faux Amis)
Because English and French share so much history, many words look the same but have completely different meanings.
Actuellement: This does NOT mean "actually." It means "currently."
Attendre: This does NOT mean "to attend." It means "to wait."
Passer um examen: This means "to take a test," not necessarily to "pass" (succeed) in it.
2. Neglecting the "Gender" of nouns
Every object in French is either masculine (un/le) or feminine (une/la). Many students ignore this, thinking it doesn't matter. While people will still understand you, using the wrong gender can change the meaning of a word entirely!
Le livre is a book. La livre is a pound. I teach you tricks to recognize gender patterns based on word endings so it becomes second nature.
3. Translating literally from English
French has its own logic. For example, in English, you say "I am 40 years old." In French, we use the verb "to have" (avoir): "J’ai 40 ans" (I have 40 years). My 29 years of experience allow me to spot these "English-isms" immediately and help you switch your brain into "French mode."
4. Being afraid to speak until "it’s perfect"
This is the biggest mistake of all. Perfectionism is the enemy of fluency. My classroom is a stress-free environmentwhere mistakes are celebrated as progress. Whether we are discussing my dog Heidi, my daughters’ horses, or the beautiful sunsets on the Île de Ré, the goal is communication.
