Moving to France is a dream for many, but the reality of the French administration and daily social codes can be overwhelming if you arrive unprepared. If you are currently packing your bags, you don't need to master the entire dictionary; you need to focus on the "survival and integration" essentials.

In my 29 years of teaching, I have helped countless expatriates transition smoothly to their new lives. Here is what you should prioritize before you land.

1. The "Golden Rule" of Politesse
In France, social etiquette is a language of its own. The most important word is not "bread" or "water"—it is "Bonjour."
  • The Ritual: You must say "Bonjour" (or "Bonsoir") when entering a shop, a bakery, or an office. Without it, the rest of your conversation may be difficult.
  • The Nuance: I teach my students how to use these social keys to open doors and gain the respect of the locals immediately.

2. Navigating the Bureaucracy (L’administration)
The French are famous for their paperwork. To live here, you will need to understand the vocabulary related to:
  • L’immobilier: Terms for renting an apartment and understanding your lease.
  • La Banque: Setting up your account and understanding French banking fees.
  • La Santé: How to visit a doctor (le médecin) and use the French healthcare system (la Sécurité Sociale).

3. Practical Daily Life Vocabulary
You need to be able to handle "the small things" that happen every day. In my lessons, we simulate real-life scenarios like:
  • Asking for directions in La Rochelle.
  • Shopping at the local market in La Flotte.
  • Ordering at a restaurant without hesitation.

4. Why an immersion experience is your best shortcut
If you are moving soon, a standard app won't cut it. You need to hear the real accent and understand the cultural "dos and don'ts." I offer personalized intensive courses and full immersion experiences right here on the Île de Ré. There is no better way to prepare than living the French life for a few days before your official move.

Moving to France is a life-changing event. Make sure the language is your bridge, not your barrier.
