Morning routine: 30 minutes of French to start your day

One of the most common reasons students tell me they aren't progressing is "lack of time." We all lead busy lives, and finding a two-hour block to study French can feel impossible. But here is a secret from my 29 years of teaching: consistency is far more powerful than intensity.
You don't need a whole afternoon; you just need 30 minutes. By integrating French into your morning routine, you "wake up" your brain in the language. Before you know it, you will start thinking in French before you even leave the house.
Here is my recommended 30-minute "mini-immersion" schedule to transform your progress.
Minutes 1–10: The "Ear-Wakeup" (Passive Listening)
While you are making your coffee or tea, turn on a French radio station or podcast. I often recommend France Info or RFI Musique.
The Goal: Do not try to translate every word. Just let the sounds, the rhythm, and the melody of the language wash over you.
The Benefit: This tunes your ear to the "music" of French, making it easier to understand native speakers later in the day.
Minutes 11–20: The "Daily Script" (Active Speaking)
Now that your coffee is ready, take ten minutes to narrate your morning in French. Speak out loud—even if you are alone!
The Exercise: Describe what you are doing. "Je prépare mon café," "Il fait beau aujourd'hui," or "Où est mon sac ?" * The Benefit: This builds the muscle memory in your jaw and tongue. It bridges the gap between "knowing" a word and actually "saying" it.
Minutes 21–30: The "Vocabulary Boost" (Reading or Writing)
Spend your last ten minutes engaging with a bit of text.
The Exercise: Read a short news article, look at a French post on Instagram, or write three sentences in a journal about your plans for the day.
The Benefit: This reinforces the grammar and vocabulary you have been learning in your lessons.
