Is French difficult for English speakers? Breaking the myths

One of the most common questions I hear from prospective students is: "Is French actually hard to learn if I only speak English?" Many people are intimidated by the reputation of French grammar and the famous "r" sound. However, as a native teacher with 29 years of experience, I have a secret to share with you: if you already speak English, you are already halfway there.

In fact, French is often considered one of the easiest languages for English speakers to acquire. Here is why you have a massive advantage and how we can make the process even smoother.

1. The shared linguistic history
Did you know that nearly 45% of all English words have a French origin? After the Norman Conquest in 1066, French became the language of the court, administration, and literature in England for centuries. This historical connection created thousands of "cognates"—words that look and mean the same in both languages.

Think about words like:
  • Liberty (liberté)
  • Justice (justice)
  • Impossible (impossible)
  • Restaurant (restaurant)

When you start learning with me, we begin by identifying these "anchor words." You will realize that your vocabulary is already much larger than you imagined.

2. Simplification of grammar
While French does have genders (masculine and feminine) and more verb conjugations than English, the structure of the sentences is very similar. Both languages follow the subject-verb-object pattern.
My teaching method focuses on personalized lessons that do not get bogged down in technical jargon. Instead of memorizing abstract rules, we use the language in context. By relating grammar to your daily life( your goals, your hobbies, or even my life with my husband Claude and our daughters on the Île de Ré), the rules start to feel natural rather than forced.

3. Mastering the pronunciation
Yes, French has sounds that do not exist in English, but they are not impossible to master. The "easiest" way to improve your accent is through active listening and feedback. Living in La Flotte, one of the most beautiful villages in France, I am surrounded by the authentic sounds of the language every day. I bring that authenticity to our lessons. We will work on your "ear" before your "eyes," helping you mimic the musicality of French until it feels like second nature.

4. Why a stress-free approach matters
The biggest barrier for English speakers is often the fear of making a mistake. In my classes, I provide a stress-free environment. Whether you choose online lessons or a full immersion experience here on the island, my goal is to give you the confidence to speak.

We might talk about your favorite movies, or I might tell you about taking our dog Heidi for a walk on the beach or the girls taking care of their horses. When you are engaged in a real conversation, the "difficulty" of the language disappears.
