Île de Ré is one of those places that surprises you. Small, elegant, and yet simple, it offers an experience very different from France’s major cities.

Many travelers arrive expecting only a charming island, but they find much more than that: a calm pace, open landscapes, authentic villages, and a way of life that invites you to slow down. After years of living here and hosting students, I can say with confidence: Île de Ré is not just a destination; it is an experience.

If you are planning your trip, here is everything you need to know before visiting.

1. Where is Île de Ré and how to get there

Île de Ré is located on the west coast of France, near the city of La Rochelle. Access is simple: you can take a train to La Rochelle and, from there, cross the bridge that connects the mainland to the island. You can also arrive by car. The proximity to the mainland makes the trip practical, yet the feeling upon arrival is one of total disconnection.

2. Best time to visit

The island can be visited year-round, but the experience changes significantly with the season. In the summer, the atmosphere is more lively, with more movement and long days. In the spring and early autumn, the island is quieter, ideal for those seeking calm and contact with nature. Many visitors are surprised to find that outside of peak season, Île de Ré reveals an even more authentic side.

3. How to get around the island

One of the greatest charms of Île de Ré is how you move. The bicycle is the main mode of transport. The island has bike paths everywhere, connecting beaches, villages, and natural landscapes. Cycling here isn't just practical; it’s part of the experience.

4. What to do in Île de Ré

The island offers a combination of nature, culture, and gastronomy. You can explore local markets, walk along the harbors, visit villages like Saint-Martin-de-Ré, discover quiet beaches, or simply sit at a café and observe the rhythm of local life. This is not a destination for rushing; it’s a place to live each moment with more presence.

5. Where to stay

Île de Ré has options ranging from boutique hotels to more intimate accommodations. Many visitors prefer
staying in studios or small residences, which allow for an experience closer to the local routine. Your choice of lodging directly influences how you experience the island.

6. The importance of living the French language during your trip

One of the biggest differences between visiting France and truly living it lies in the language. Even with a basic level of French, the experience changes completely. You connect more with people, understand the environment better, and gain autonomy. This is when many travelers realize how much the language transforms the journey.

Île de Ré is a destination that goes beyond tourism. It invites you to slow down, observe, and live with more presence. And when you combine this experience with learning French, the impact is even greater.
